[ Scientific Notation Guide ]
Soil Microbiology, Microbial Ecology, and Composting

Scientific notation is defined by Webster's Dictionary as a "system in which numbers are expressed as products consisting of a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by an appropriate power of 10." Examples are listed below for converting laboratory results expressed in scientific notation into whole numbers.

  • 100 = 1
  • 101 = 10
  • 102 = 100
  • 103 = 1,000
  • 104 = 10,000
  • 105 = 100,000
  • 106 = 1,000,000
  • 107 = 10,000,000
  • 108 = 100,000,000
  • 109 = 1,000,000,000
  • 1010 = 10,000,000,000
